Sevenoaks shorts sink Brooklands

Brooklands had a another long trip down to Kent to build on a good performance against Beeston the week before. Sevenoaks are brand new to the premier league and a whole new kettle of fish with regards to their style of play. Preparation was done at training and the lads knew the game plan, it was time to execute.

The game started with the Georges road side having the majority of the possession. Looking for openings, the back line of Peter Flanagan and Nick Little moved the Sevenoaks forwards around but they stood fast and made it hard work to penetrate through their defence. The Sevenoaks men were playing with desperation for points and it looked as though Brooklands were being a little to casual to say the least.

This was evident when Sevenoaks won a corner, the dangerous flicker stepped up and put the ball high into the goal beating a flailing post man and diving keeper. 1-0 Sevenoaks. It seemed these men weren't going to turn over and die, they were here for points. The goal seemed to wake Brooklands up, however consistent errors plagued the team and a string of passes was closely followed by errors.

Brooklands kept pressing forward and continued to create attacking chances, this persistence paid off and Brooklands were awarded a corner. An eager number 1 runner meant Brooklands were forced to changed up the straight flick option and went for a routine. The initial shot was blocked and fell to David Flanagan who turned and shot home on the half volley. 1-1! Brooklands were back in the game and it was time for them start again and regroup for the second half.

Coach Bateman asked the team to step up and find that extra gear, he needed more from the players. The legs weren't an issue, the ability of the team was not in question but the desire and dogged character that Brooklands pride themselves on, wasn't there.

The second half was a similar story with the dangerous drag flicker scoring twice to bump up the score to 3-1. Brooklands constant turn over was actually incredible to see and an honest evaluation was needed. This was not a Brooklands side the travelling fans were used to watching. That being said, with 2 wins on the board this was the kick up the backside the team needed and showed that NO game is an easy win in the premier league.

To add to our sorrows, our number 1 runner Stefan Ray-Hills was injured after a flick struck him on the foot, he could be a worry for next week in a tough game vs Reading. A big week ahead of us before taking on Reading at the fortress. Its time for the lads to put things right on home turf.
