Brooklands hold star studded Surbiton

With a week of change, a cancelled training session and each individual having an honest look at their performance, Brooklands had a point to prove against a star studded Surbiton side who had Great Britain caps coming out of their ears.

An unchanged side may have seemed like a surprise but a change in attitude and determination from both players and coaching staff seemed to make a huge difference in the opening exchanges of the game. The Surbiton side may have seen Brooklands troubles in previous weeks and felt this would be a walk over but Brooklands had other ideas.

In the early exchanges Brooklands dominated and in particular the speed, power and composure of Sam 'the mule' Perrin resulted in an early breakthrough after some nice skill to eliminate defenders and more importantly, the Great Britain keeper. 1-0 Brooklands, GAME ON.

This seemed to shock Surbiton who were taken back by the speed at which the Georges Road side played. The pressure was sustained and with numerous attacks down the right hand side between Oliver Clarke, David Flanagan and Aidan Khares, corners and chances came thick and fast. Their has been some internal changes in the team with James Suttcliffe and Khares playing new roles in the midfield. Both showed their expansive play and pulled strings to which the Surbiton side couldn't handle, this had been lacking in previous weeks.

Brooklands pride themselves on their dogged defence and this would be vital if they were going to see any form of result from this game. As ever, Captain Peter Flanagan led from the front putting his body on the line to block shots on numerous occasions. Chris Scott also got in the action with what can only be described as a wonder, double save from a short corner. The big man doing what he does well and got big. A lucky goal from the Surbiton side came against the run of play and just like cricket, its not always the fastest ball that does the damage, this time Chris Scott was deceived by a topped shot or in cricketing terms a slower ball. 1-1.

The half time whistle went with Brooklands in the driving seat, they had to take this momentum into the second half.

Coach Bateman and Coach Gannon ask for more in the second half and with Nick 'the Greek' Little benched due to injury they would have to do it with 15 players, a tough ask when up against full time athletes.

It looked as though the Georges road men had put everything on the line in the first half as it was Surbition to score again to make it 2-1 to Surbiton, a very soft goal in the grand scheme of things as it was a number of mistakes which presented the opportunity and not Surbiton's attacking prowess.

A steely determination was back with the side this week and it showed as once again the Surbiton goal was being threatened straight from the restart. The speed of Peter Cornell and Sam Perrin was something the Surbiton defence couldn't live with. Cornell was to reap the rewards of these sustained attacks with a nice back post tip in after good work from Perrin and Richard Slater. 2-2 with plenty of time to find a winner.

The midfield is where the Surbiton team were set to dominate however the midfield 5 of Aidan Khares, Stefan Ray Hills, Tom lush, Alex Humphreys and James Sutcliffe put a stop to this and showed not only defensive nous but some creative play that makes Brooklands so threatening. This showed once again with a typical Brooklands move between the trio of Khares, Flanagan.D and Clarke who forced a corner. A calm but confident short corner attack stepped up and executed a smart routine which ended with Aidan Khares deflecting home from close range. A deserved goal after the shift he had put in. 3-2 Brooklands

With 90 seconds on the clock it was heart break for Brooklands as a speculative shot which was sailing wide but was deflected home nicely from a Surbiton forward. However with the current position of the opposition, Brooklands were happy with the point and it keeps the points tally moving the right direction. Final result 3-3 but on reflection and comparing to last week, this was a huge step forward.

Special mentions must go to Dan Vincent and Andy Jackson who are the unsung heroes of every game with numerous game saving tackles and non stop defensive work, long minutes had to be played due to Nick Little's injury. The credit often goes to the goal scorers and the dogged defensive work often goes unnoticed.

This result is an excellent step forwards for the Brooklands men who are already looking forward to next weeks game which will be the last before the Christmas break starts.
