Macclesfield Ladies 1 v Brooklands Ladies 3 (7 – 0)
It was always going to be a challenging game playing an away fixture against a first team with a number of our players unavailable.
New team captain, Pam Dixon, only had 11 players available including some players who are kick-starting their hockey careers and some very young players (the youngest being just 14).
Things did not get off to a particularly promising start with a goal being conceded in the first couple of minutes and by half time it was 6-0. Yet, that score did not reflect how well the team battled in the face of adversity.
The second half performance was very different. No doubt Macclesfield (and even some of our supporters!) expected a similar score line in the second half. However, after a rousing half time team talk, all 11 team members came onto the pitch determined that Macclesfield were not going to overrun them again.
The second half was a very different affair. Macclesfield started the second half as they had finished the first with wave after wave of attacks on the Brooklands’ goal. However, the team stuck to their game plan and put in a gutsy second half performance in which the defence staved off all the Macclesfield attacks (until the last minute of the game!) and the forwards made some good runs and even had a few sights on the Macclesfield goal.
Well done girls!
Our woman of the match was Amy Hatch for her sterling work in defence.
