First game of the season against a Men’s 1’s team saw a very young Brooklands M4’s team, ably supported by Ian J in nets, come away with a point.
Brooklands started with their usual flair, committing players into the attack, and were straight on the offensive. After a couple of half chances Warrington broke and caught a new make shift defence slightly high and we found ourselves 1 – 0 down after only 3 minutes.
Brooklands continued to press and dominate play and possession which eventually paid dividends with two quick goals within a minute by Rob H.
Driving through the Warrington defence Rob H drew their keeper 1 on 1 and slapped past him to bring the scores level. The next was a true poachers goal, keeper saved the first shot from point blank range but didn’t clear the ball with Rob H scrambling the ball over the line, 1 – 2 Brooklands after 17 minutes.
A short corner, well executed by Warrington brought them back level for less than 2 minutes. A fast flowing Brooklands attack ripped Warrington apart and as the ball came to Henry M at the top of the D he calmly shot past the keeper to restore Brooklands lead at 2 – 3 which we maintained until half time.
Warrington came out at the start of the second half looking to press the young Brooklands team high and isolate the half backs high up the pitch. The plan paid dividends with the pressure eventually resulting in a poor pass to Warrington’s Centre forward who kindly accepted the gift to level up at 3 – 3.
Brooklands paid the price again for attacking commitment half way through the half and after squandering a chance to retake the lead having missed an open goal we found ourselves 4 – 3 down 7 seconds later as Warrington broke with pace and found Brooklands short at the back.
Charlie M popped up with his second goal in 2 games 5 minutes later, a lovely reverse stick shot from near the top of the D through the keeper to restore parity at 4 – 4. Warrington continued to press high whilst Brooklands pressured hard and broke quickly but neither side could find the winner.
Warrington’s change in style meant the second half was more evenly contested than the first and the lads need to learn how to release pressure and not to over commit on occasions.
Ian J needs a special mention, stepping in as a make shift keeper for the match and played well. Kicking in particular belayed his lack of experience in the role and overall was the more accomplished of the two keepers.
Cam S also deserves a mention for having a good game as a make shift Centre back.
Given 6 of the squad were 15 and another 4, 18 or younger, the future looks good for this group as they step up to playing this level, and ultimately beyond, and also bond as a team.
