The day started badly! While the juniors & Mr. Marple & Son travelled direct to the ground in relative ease, those of us that met at Brooklands were persuaded to join Mr.Evil as he had offered to transport us all in his Volvo tank. In the immortal words of D.Hall, by the time we had reached Shaftsbury Ave, "Rumble Rumble we're a tank" was coming true as his jalopy grinded along the road at a positively pedestrian pace & we realised that we'd never make the game if it was next Sat never mind 3pm today. So Binnsy made an executive decision to turn around, get 2 cars that worked & set off again. Mr. Evil's mood was black & we feared the worst for the opposition!
Arriving at breath neck speed, we reached Macc with mins to spare & after a quick warm-up, Binnsy assembled the collective mix of oldies & young uns, held the teamtalk & then we got down to the business of getting 3pts at this new league level. The first 20 mins displayed the fact that this was the 1st league game with both teams being edgy & chances being few. Brooklands had 3 PCs that they failed to convert & then oops, Macc scored with the first foray into the Brooklands D. The game continued edgy & mistake-ridden until HT 1-0 down.
Panic didnt set in & the 2nd half brought more composure & playing the Brooklands way of patient build-up, smart pass & move, pressure told & Mark D scored the equaliser. The oppo were aggrieved & losing focus, the sly old fox took a quick self-pass, rode the challenge of a defender, drove into the D, slipped the ball to Mark D, who expertly slotted the ball into the net. As the game wound down, Brooklands' defence came into its own as Mr. Marple & Son decided to take unwelcome breaks from the game, but it held resolute & the game finished 2-1 & 3pts in the bag. A new look team with numerous personnel changes from last year showed clear potential to being a threat at this higher level...
Our juniors, AZ, Benny, Cam, Johnny & Theo excelled in their 1st game - a 3 leagues step up from last season in the 7s. A special mention must go to Ed Boo, who volunteered to be GK & performed superbly all game (nothing he could do about the Macc goal). Mr. Evil nearly escaped his DoD moniker with some great defence, but not enough!
